In The Bag

I love those people you meet who you click with instantly. I’ve only had a few come into my life over the years. For the most part, I warm up to people slowly and like to get a good sense of them before I commit my friendship. But occasionally, I’ll know at first introduction that a person is going to be a pal for life. My best girl friend in Nashville, Liz, is an example of this.

I’d literally never met her, we exchanged a couple emails, and I decided to sublease a room in her house for a summer while I interned there. She seemed not crazy and the rent was affordable; that was pretty much the only criteria I needed met. Little did I know, she was sort of crazy, but in the best possible way, and I quickly had a best friend after three months. We ate more than our weight in Panera Bread every single weekend after long nights out, and she shared my unhealthy love of a creamy Sonic Blast after an especially emotional day.

We also become deeply obsessive about superfluous things, like Netflix series and dumb boys we had crushes on at the time. Ah, that’s another thing: we both used to be tainted with the worst taste in men. (We’ve each stepped up our games in that department, thank goodness, and are in loving relationships with some good dudes now.) It seemed like we honestly shared the same brain.

We were both vegetarians; we were equally more interested in beer than sport in our summer kickball league; and we had enormous creative aspirations and dreams that we’d chat about for hours and hours. I could go on, but I think you understand. I mean, it was kind of like we were destined for friendship, don’t you think?

You most likely have humans in your life like this, too. And that sort of fateful relationship that comes so unexpectedly is precisely how I feel about this bag. You think I’m kidding. I’m not. I didn’t know it was coming; it was the most intuitive Christmas gift find by John’s mom (thank you again, Contessa!). I didn’t even know I wanted or needed it in my life until I had it.

It’s made of soft, smell-good, quality leather, which is expected since it hails from one of my favorite brands, Madewell. It fits everything I need, plus some, and it fashions both a cross-body strap option and handbag straps. I always appreciate a little versatility in my accessories. The rich brown and black leather is so chic but also simple enough style-wise to wear every day. It’s basically Liz, but, you know, in bag form. So today, I’m just taking a few moments—and this blog post—to appreciate the people, and also the handbags, in my life that suddenly made it so much better.
